Run Beyond is a contemporary homage to Fred Rohé and The Zen of Running (1974), retracing both the physical and philosophical path he first charted. Conceived as a continuation rather than a reinterpretation, the project carries Rohé’s pioneering spirit forward. It passes the torch to a new generation of runners and seekers. Created in memory of Fred, Run Beyond acknowledges the quiet ember we each carry, capable of illuminating the dark.
At its core, Run Beyond is a beginner’s guide to running as a meditative practice. The publication blends practical instruction with reflection, offering entry points rather than prescriptions. Compiled from years of notes, observations, and graphic exploration, the zine reads as a hybrid—part field manual, part poetry—inviting readers to find their own rhythm and meaning through movement.
Released in recognition of the 50th anniversary of The Zen of Running, the project honors a book that fundamentally reshaped how running could be understood—not merely as sport, but as a contemplative act. Rohé’s ideas continue to resonate within endurance culture and beyond, influencing generations drawn to the intersection of physical effort and inner reflection.
The journey retraces Rohé’s original routes through Marin County, California—across rolling hills, redwood forests, and the rugged coastline surrounding San Francisco. The runner moves with intention, carrying a quiet force meant to be shared. A reminder that we all hold an ember, and we can stoke it, one step at a time.
